Welcome kindred spirit. I’m so glad you found your way here! Allow me to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself and how The Shabby Mermaid came to be.
Two of my biggest passions are thrifting and repurposing vintage or worn decor items into beautiful and unique one-of-a-kind treasures for my home that really represent me and my love of all things shabby-chic. In 2008, I started a DIY decorating blog, Centsible Chic, just as a way to showcase some of my fabulous frugal trash-to-treasure projects and to show others how easy it is to decorate on a budget with just a little bit of creativity and know-how.
I gained a small following, but hit a brick wall on how to take the blog to the next level. It was my hobby, but it wasn’t a business, so in 2012 I put the brakes on and decided to take a blogging break.
Since then, I decided that I wanted a different vibe in my home and really became attracted to the beach-chic look. I love the style’s combination of vintage and coastal, and made it my mission to slowly redecorate my small brick rancher (set in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains — a long way from the closest beach) in that style to bring a little bit of the beach look and feel I love into my little mountain home.
Being retired, I had plenty of time to thrift, junk, and visit yard sales and estate sales looking for just the right pieces. I was in no hurry. This time I was redecorating for the pure enjoyment of the process. As part of that process, I began making DIY signs and wall art, and refinishing small unloved home decor items into beach-chic styled pieces.
This entire process filled me with such passion and enjoyment that I knew I had finally found my heart’s true calling and began to wonder how I could turn this new “hobby” into a business. I never really viewed myself as an entrepreneur, so I sought out the help of a professional business coach who has helped me connect with my purpose, and leverage my passion for decorating and sign-making into a real “work-from-home” business.
From those coaching sessions, The Shabby Mermaid was born.
I will be blogging about my latest DIY coastal-inspired shabby-chic decorating projects, as well as showcasing items featured in my Etsy shop. Here’s to new beginnings.
